Russell Chalmers
Russell has a PhD from the Department of Ichthyology and Fisheries Science, Rhodes University. During his PhD studies Russell managed a large marine conservation planning project in South Africa which involved conducting baseline marine ecological surveys and spatio-temporal assessments of commercial, recreational and subsistence fisheries sectors. These data were used to facilitate the design of a coastal marine protected area taking socio-ecological conflicts into account. Other outcomes included providing a monitoring framework and implementation plan to the South African National Parks to monitor the long-term effectiveness of new spatial management strategies through the use of indicators and key milestones.
Russell has fifteen years of consulting experience, and has conducted specialist biodiversity and fisheries dependent assessments on freshwater, estuarine and marine systems. In addition he has prepared numerous coastal zone management plans on provincial, district and local municipal levels, as well as conducted spatial assessments of resource use activities for management and planning purposes. Additional skills include community engagement, database design and GIS expertise.
Russell’s key skills and qualifications include:
- PhD Ichthyology & Fisheries Science, Rhodes University, 2011
- SACNASP – Pri. Sci. Nat. 400129/13
- Honorary Research Associate to the South African Institute for Aquatic Biodiversity (SAIAB)

Naomi Richardson
Naomi has an MSc from the Department of Ichthyology and Fisheries Science, Rhodes University. She has been involved in the design, implementation and management of several large, long term monitoring programmes to meet with the requirements of the International Finance Corporation Performance Standards. The monitoring programmes are based on scientifically sound principles and approaches which incorporate early warning indicators to assist managers in the day to day running of projects. The focus of the monitoring has been on aquatic ecosystems, ranging from biological information on fish and invertebrates, water chemistry reporting, river flow monitoring, as well as information on resource use by local communities.
She has recently managed a fish and fisheries motioning programme on the Kafue Flats in Zambia. This involved collection of seasonal fisheries biodiversity and fisheries dependent data over the period of one year across the Kafue Flats, as well as gathering catch data, market data and livelihood information of the Kafue Flats fishers. Naomi has ten years of consulting experience, has worked in many African countries and is fluent in French.
Naomi’s key skills and qualifications include:
- MSc Ichthyology, Rhodes University, 2007
- SACNASP – Pri. Sci. Nat. 400093/14
- EIA Short Course, Rhodes University, 2008
- Diplôme Approfondis de la Langue Française, International French Competency Certificate 2007
- PADI Advanced diver

Craig Rennie
Craig completed his Master of Science in Ichthyology at Rhodes University. During his MSc, Craig conducted extensive biodiversity surveys to fill a critical sampling gap in southern Africa and conducted habitat use assessments to inform the sustainable development of large-scale developments in the Kabompo River basin, Zambia. This involved identifying key habitat characteristics for a wide range of small fish species in a poorly studied area where riverine communities are dependent on the local fishery. Craig has experience working in small and large freshwater and estuarine systems in southern Africa, sampling fish and aquatic invertebrates. His previous sampling experience includes biodiversity surveys, fisheries independent surveys, fisheries dependent surveys and alien invasive species monitoring and detection.
He has recently conducted fisheries independent surveys in 10 dams in Zambia’s Eastern Province. This involved collecting seasonal fisheries independent data to assist in developing sustainable small-scale fisheries on these dams to increase the availability of low-cost protein and micronutrients for communities. Additional skills include statistical analysis and GIS.
Craig’s key skills and qualifications include:
- MSc Ichthyology, Rhodes University, 20022
- Fish identification and Taxonomy
- EIA Short Course, Rhodes University, 2008
- GIS
