Abalone Survey

Wild Coast, South Africa

Aquatic Ecosystem Services jointly implemented the Wild Coast abalone survey in 2013. The diving survey was implemented on behalf of the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) in order to establish the distribution, abundance and population size structure of the abalone resources between the Great Kei River and the western border of the Dwesa-Cwebe Reserve. The survey was conducted to improve the available scientific information on the abalone resources to inform future management of potential new fisheries. A total of 100 transects were surveyed within the available and suitable nearshore subtidal habitats over a 9 day period.
