The Toliara Sands Project is located in the south west of Madagascar and involves dry mining of dune sands for the extraction and concentration of heavy minerals. AES was contracted to undertake a field assessment and prepare a specialist report on the marine ecology and artisanal fisheries in Toliara Bay which may have been impacted through the construction of a loading jetty and pipeline. The project required implementing diving surveys to assess the marine ecology and undertaking key stakeholder interviews with fishery participants and conducting frame surveys. This information was used to identify and assess severity and significance of potential impacts on the ecology and fisheries.
