Bas Ogooué, Gabon
Household and Livelihood Survey
Following ten years of successful inland fisheries interventions in the Oguemoué Lake, Gabon, with Organisation Ecologique des Lacs et de l’Ogooué (OELO), The Nature Conservancy (TNC) Gabon is undertaking an expansion of its inland fisheries management programme into the broader Bas Ogooué region. To ensure this expansion is successful, gathering a range of descriptive data about the livelihood activities of the human communities inhabiting the Bas Ogooué region was critical. This would enable the characterisation of these communities regarding their reliance on natural resources, generally but particularly fisheries.
A household survey was carried out by AES in collaboration with local partners (OELO, DGEA and TNC) across eight Bas Ogooué lakes to collect baseline data in September 2022. Local enumerators were trained to undertake interviews appropriately and to understand the survey. Over 500 riparian households were interviewed during the survey period. Comprehensive data were collected on each household’s livelihood activities, fisheries activities, resource use and the social and environmental challenges they face. This data provides essential information to facilitate the program’s expansion into the broader Bas Ogooué region.
