Base Titanium, Kenya
Environmental Monitoring and Reporting
Base Titanium Limited (Base) operates a heavy minerals mine in Kwale County, Kenya located approximately 50km south of Mombasa. The sands are mined to produce Zircon, Rutile and Ilmenite, which are exported via a purpose built Shiploading facility in the Port of Mombasa. AES has been providing environmental monitoring and reporting services to Base since the beginning of the construction phase in 2012. AES has assisted in the development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for various aspects of Base’s Environmental Monitoring Programme, as well as updating and developing Environmental Management Plans and Programmes during the construction and operation phases of the Project.
The construction phase was completed in October 2013; subsequently AES has prepared the Annual Environmental Monitoring Reports for submission to Kenyan authorities and Base’s financial lending partners. These were prepared to Kenyan and International Finance Corporation (IFC) Environmental Health and Safety standards. AES continues to provide monitoring and management assistance to Base’s Environment Department in the form of on-going training, data management, reporting, and fieldwork support.
